4-H: A Historical Overview

​The 4-H program began in the United States around 1902 as a rural youth program to teach modern farming. It expanded globally through international agricultural and cultural exchanges, notably spreading to Canada in 1913 and growing into a worldwide movement now active in over 80 countries

In Canada, 4-H originated in Roland, Manitoba, in 1913 as the Boys' and Girls' Club. By 1918, Prince Edward Island introduced individual project clubs, with swine and poultry being among the first established.

By 1933, the program expanded its skill-based projects beyond livestock, launching the first sewing clubs. Over the years, various agricultural projects were introduced, leading to the transformation of individual project clubs into the multi-project clubs we see today, offering a wide array of projects and learning opportunities!

The name was officially changed to “4-H Club” in 1952, and the original 4-H Clover was adopted as the logo. While today’s logo appears quite different from its 1952 version, the four H's continue to symbolize Head, Heart, Hands, and Health while the colors stand for Agriculture (Green) and Youth (White).
